Biography

She was still at Music College when Joanne Camilleri started performing as a professional soloist around different countries. One acclaimed recital followed another as she was invited to play at the Octobre Musical de Carthage in Tunisia; the Municipal Art Gallery in Cork, Ireland; the Ardudwy Theatre, Harlech, Wales; the Erin Arts Centre at the Isle of Man; at St Martin-in-the-Fields and St James Churches in London; Cheltenham; Oxford; in numerous venues around Manchester and around the Lake District. She has also appeared as a concerto soloist in the UK.

Coming from Malta, Joanne has performed her native country on numerous occasions – at the age of 13, performing at Malta’s National Manoel Theatre in a Mozart Night concert alongside the British pianist Ann Rachin; and a few years later chosen to perform alongside the Russian concert pianist Vladimir Ovchinnikov in a millennium year concert of Twentieth Century Music. Other performance opportunities have lead to recitals during La Navigation du Saviour Festival at Robert Samut Hall; the National Theatre’s Foyer on several occasions and the Recital Room of St. James Cavalier. She also played alongside Carmine Lauri, leader of the London Symphony Orchestra, in a concert organized by the Ambassador in London to celebrate the Maltese Independence Day. Joanne was also invited to perform as concerto soloist with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.

An avid chamber musician, Joanne has also worked with many professional partners in various different ensembles – ranging from piano duo/duet; violin duo; horn trio; piano trio; and piano quartet, and has frequently performed in the highly acclaimed chamber music festivals at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, UK. She also worked with the Halle` Youth Choir in the UK when they performed in the Brahms & Schumann Fest. As member of the Camilleri Trio (together with Alison Hughes, clarinet, and Anja Inge, cello), Joanne has been on tour in Sweden and UK, performing works from the classical, romantic and contemporary repertoire.

Joanne was regarded as a highly gifted musician from a very young age. She was tutored by Vincent Borg and then by Ingrid Calleja in her higher grades; complimentary studies in theory and aural awareness were pursued with Dr Mro Dion Buhagiar, Davinia Galea, Yvette Galea and Anthony Spiteri; while she also participated in several Masterclasses with international musicians such as: F. Fodera, Ruth Harte, Cynthia Turner, Marcel Baudet, and Nina Kazimrova.

She placed first in all the then-available Maltese competitions, one of which was the prestigious Bice Mizzi Vassallo Music Competition, which gave her the opportunity to attend the Lake District Summer Music Course, UK. At 17, she was the youngest pianist on the advanced solo course, where she enjoyed her first taste of international music-making in lessons with Renna Kellaway and Carole Presland.

A year later, Carole Presland was to be her piano tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, where Joanne was able to study after she was awarded the prestigious four-year international scholarship by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. This was a result of having been recommended for a scholarship by the examiner on two occasions. This was only the second time that such a major scholarship was awarded to a Maltese musician. At the end of her first year as an undergraduate student, Joanne was also successful in obtaining a grade A for the LRSM Diploma in Performance. At the end of her BMus course Joanne was awarded a First Class Honours Degree, with First Class in her Final Recital.

Encouraged to continue furthering her studies, Joanne was generously supported by the Janatha Stubbs Foundation for two years, during which she read for a Masters Degree in Performance, graduating with Distinction in Performance, and a Postgraduate Degree, where she continued specializing in professional performance under Carole Presland and Alexander Melnikov, again graduating with Distinction in Performance and obtaining 97% in her final recital.

Joanne was one of the College’s top students, being awarded numerous prizes while a student there, including: the Ruth Hewitt Scholarship (2004); the Alfred Clay Scholarship for Piano (2004); the Clifton Helliwell Memorial Award (2005); the Ruth Hewitt Scholarship (2005); the Peter Frankl Prize for Piano (2006). She performed with the acclaimed RNCM Wind Orchestra in the 2005 International Wind Festival and also did a Chandos recording with them. Throughout her years as a student there, she was given the opportunity to perform in numerous Seminars, Festivals, as well as in Masterclasses with internationally renowned musicians including: Sergei Dorensky, Nelson Goerner, Daniel Hoexter, Stephen Hough (on one occasion working with him on one of his own compositions), Jin Ju, Steven Osborne, Stephen Savage and Akico Wakabayashi; while chamber music Masterclasses included those with Ian Brown, Yair Kless, Christopher Rowland, Jeremy Young, Marco Von Pagee and the duo Jennifer Micallef and Glen Inanga.

In her last year at the College, Joanne was one of twelve students selected to take part in the prestigious Gold Medal Weekend – a showcase for the College’s most outstanding students – where she performed a solo recital to high acclaim.

Since her first attendance on the Lake District Summer Music Course, Joanne has returned several times through the aid of scholarships, where she worked with famous international pianists including Arnaldo Cohen, Ben Frith, Klaus Hellwig, Renna Kellaway, Leon McCawley, Thomas Sauer and Barry Snyder; and members of internationally renowned chamber ensembles, namely the Chilingirian String Quartet, the Sorrel String Quartet, the Skampa Quartet, Trio Ondine, Gould Piano Trio and Christopher Rowland. While on the course, she performed in several Young Artists Concerts in Ambleside, Windermere, Grasmere and Hawkshead, and was also invited to give a solo recital to the LDSM Patrons.

Joanne continues to be strongly committed to performing; as soloist, concerto artist and chamber musician; and is currently reading for a Doctorate in Performance with Mro Michael Laus.

Joanne was presented by the Maltese Council for Culture and the Arts as one of Malta’s young highly gifted artists to the European Cultural Foundation Europamusicale Board of Trustees in Munich.
